Introduction
Jean-Francois CLAVEL
He graduated from a renowned French school of engineering for mechanical engineering (l’École Normale Supérieure de Cachan). In 1992, Jean-François discovered the wonderful world of sailing during a round trip cruise from France and Iceland. A Former high level sportsman and a passionate traveler, sailing had been the perfect occasion to combine both of those qualities.
He start his career as a teacher in an engineering school in Grenoble (l’École Nationale Supérieur d’Hydraulique et de Mécanique de Grenoble). During that period, he also had the opportunity to do research on the effect of deformation on different types of materials. An opening at University of Toulon allowed him to practice his passions and at the same time he had taught material maintenance.
May 1995 was the time of a new start. He bought his first boat and named it “Sapeto”, it was a monohull of 10 meter that was made of polyester.
In 1996 it had been the beginning of a new era for Jean-Francois; from there he lived aboard his boat for seven years. Four out of the seven years on his boat were dedicated to travelling. He had a great adventure of crossing the Atlantic Ocean on three occasions. He added to his knowledge by spending two years working on his boat onshore.
In 2004, after being in Brazil for two year he made the decision to sell “Sapeto”. The new priority of Jean-François was to design and build a boat. “Kawai” had been the result of his hard work; it was a light and fast family catamaran. It had been his first shot as a naval architect and a constructor. He is not the only one to be pleased with his realization, the professional architects and constructors are surprised and impressed as well with his boat. The results of creating his first boat pushed him to follow his passions so he moved to the Antilles were boats and the sea could meet every day.
