General description

I designed and built Kawai for my own use. The program was for family long journeys.

cruise in the west indies whit this yacht I wanted a resistant boat, able to sail in all tropical conditions, for long trips, without structure for maintenance. The boat had to be able to have a good comportment at sea, even against the wind. I wanted an easy to sail, interesting and fast boat.

I chose wood and epoxy to combine low displacement, high resistance and rigidity, facility to build and maintain. I used carbon fiber, principally, to minimize the longitudinal inertia. All the weight is centered or minimized at the extremities for the same reason. Mast, spreaders, daggerboards and front beam spreaders are wood and carbon. Rigging fittings, rudder shafts and bowsprit are carbon.

I gave priority to the common and outside parts of the boat: salon, cockpit, front deck. The salon has four opening windows of 1,5 x 3’ and a main door of 5 x 7’, which gives this part of the boat the particularity of being a comfortable hove in bad sailing conditions and an open area in good sailing conditions and at anchorage.

Kawai is a simple, strong, light and fast catamaran. She’s a real sailing boat, able to tack into an anchorage under main sail alone. She’s easy and fun to sail and maneuver.
